Why me?

“Hi Robyn. He got a 6 in maths which is what he needed for college. Thanks so much for all your help. Couldn’t have done it without you!”

Mother of a Year 11 pupil whose son needed maths for engineering at college.

My name is Robyn. I’ve been tutoring in York since 2009 after working as a teacher in East Riding. My background prior to teaching was working as a scientist and I worked in a number of NHS labs. This has all helped to feed into my love of tutoring which is a very effective way of working with people to make good progress in a subject outside of the classroom environment.

People want a tutor for many reasons. Sometimes their child is struggling at school and is ‘not getting it’. This can be difficult in a classroom with many pupils and is one of the most common reasons I get asked for tutoring. Nowadays, at least a Grade 4 or Grade 5 in maths is expected by many employers and pupils can be expected to retake it and have ‘catch up’ lessons at school or college if they don’t achieve this first time.

Good quality tuition can really help a pupil get this level if it’s started soon enough and with an experienced tutor.

“Just to let you know he got a 4 in maths and got enough qualifications to do the course he wanted at college. Thanks again for all your help in getting him the grade he needed.”

Other reasons are to ensure that the full potential of a child can be achieved and the school may not be delivering the support needed to ensure that. This is another common reason and an experienced tutor can bring high quality and challenging learning in a 1 – 1 style that can really boost potential and exceed the expectations of the school.

Having challenging concepts explained in a different way and helping the pupils to ‘get it’ can make such a difference to a pupil and I get so many texts and emails on exam results day thanking me for my support.
